Planetshaker’s, The Banquet — A community meal, or something more?

by Neal on December 21, 2009

Last Friday I took my family to a community meal, called The Banquet, that was provided by Planetshakers church recently in Ringwood. This was not the first time, in fact, I was so angry about what happened at the first meal that I was hesitant to go to the second, but for ensuring the same mistake was not made twice.

The first community meal was about the second of third that Planetshakers had run in Ringwood. While city based, they run small groups all over the metropolitan area and it seems that the Eastern Melbourne small groups decided to “serve” the local community by providing a meal. First let me say, the meal was fantastic, the food was wonderful, the setting and ambience was nice, but the what occurred while we ate and shared a meal was abhorrent. Throughout the meal, a stills camera captured everyone eating etc. In addition, a video camera roamed and panned the crowds capturing every mouth full. The night ended with the drawing of a raffle in which a limited number of bags of groceries, or toiletries or whatever were handed out to the winners. My daughter and wife won one each much to my embarrassment! We did give out the bag’s contents later to some folk who needed it more than us.

It felt like a dog and pony show.
After that first meal, I emailed the church and the group leader and complained that they should not have videoed and photographed the guests without their permission. In fact, I wasn’t going to call, but after talking with several regulars at The Dining Room and Vive Cafe and hearing how they were distressed by the cameras that I felt compelled to call. It felt like a dog and pony show. Like we, the guests, were fed so they could film. After a couple of weeks I had a call from the small group leader who ensured me that they meant no harm. That the footage was to be used to garner some funds from the local council (a whole other post!).

So, this second meal I was prepared to speak to the team about the cameras if they did not mention that they were filming and photographing and offer guests and option not to be. Much to my pleasure, and their credit, this did happen and I was prepared to enjoy the meal for what it appeared to be — a community meal. But, that was to be ruined when they handed out pens with forms for everyone to fill out with their details — and with the offer to visit and offer pastoral care.

I do not see these meals as a community effort, more like pleasant “drop-ins” on the regular lives of the guests.
Firstly, I do not see these meals as a community effort, more like pleasant “drop-ins” on the regular lives of the guests. How can they, the Planetshaker team, get to know anyone when the meals are every three months? While a wonderful change to the seeming mundane meals that are on offer each week by organisations such as churches who struggle each week with volunteers, let alone food and finances.

Secondly, the forms offered were an effort to capture names and addresses for the purposes of contact by the church and sending of material — the base being the next meal flyer. Again, I say, how can they truly serve and get to know and travel with these guests just from an irregular meal and a form? Will they know the issues these people have? Will they start to share with them the evil and profane “prosperity gospel” offering a false hope that belittles the hope we have in Jesus?

Perhaps I am being too fast to judge Planetshakers and the motives of the group providing the meals. Perhaps I am jaded and tainted by the sweat and tears of living daily in the neighbourhood and seeing these people as neighbours and friends? Maybe so, but I question and call upon Planetshakers to respond — why did they not talk with those offering existing meals, the groups and organisations that could have offered advice, become partners and utilised the enthusiasm and resources that it is obvious that Planetshakers have? Are they professing to be serving these people because they love them or what they potentially offer?

Sorry, but when a church that has thousands attend and sells CD’s etc and rolls in the money, I tend to question their motives. I am sure that many of the kids helping had their heart in the right place, but perhaps weekly encounters with their guests might tend to shift their gaze from the bright, loud and colourful stage, to the gutters and darkness that is often in the lives of those they are professing to love and serve.

G'day Neal.

I think I feel much of what you were writing in your article. Some suggestions for considering (and I'm not saying they are good suggestions but something to scratch our head and ponder).
1 – Join Planet Shakers and help them channel their outreach using your own experience
2 – Join another local Church who is doing this kind of thing and help them in any way you can
3 – The words of Ash Barker in 1992; “The first thing you have to do when getting involved in this type of ministry is stop hating the rest of the Church that isn't”

I struggle with point three as there are many 'ministries' like Cornerstone in Dandenong where I am, but we're all a bit different. Some do preaching, teaching, hand out gospel tracts etc while others don't even pray thanking God for His grace before meals. At times I have found myself thinking very critical thoughts about other ministries. I think sometimes I've been on the right track. (I've been told that 40% of the letters in the New Testament were correcting errors in the local Churches). Other times, it's been my own sinful and selfish ideals that rule my thoughts.

An older Christian told me no matter what ministry I'm involved in there will be other Chrisitans who tick me off. I've no-doubt ticked off some believers myself. There's a book out called 'Bait Of Satan' that I haven't read but apparently it talks about the “the sin of offence” where Christians are offended by other Christians and stop serving as part of the Church. Perhaps that's what Ash Barker was on about back in 1992.

Perhaps I'm just rambling or maybe it's something to chew over. Ultimately when we pray 'Your Kingdom come, Your will be done' I guess we have to say that God is sovereign and He is allowing other Church groups to do their thing for whatever reason and will bless or hinder us so His purposes can be achieved.

I haven't had anything to do with Planet Shakers so I don't know how they minister. When I was Youth Pastor at a local Church half my youth group left to attend the youth focussed/only Church down the road which was very loud and happening. Some other Pastors complained that our youth were going to this new Church. Within two years that Church halved in size as Planet Shakers sent buses out to the Dandenong area to collect young people to attend their Church services.

Does marketing come into it when you are building a biblical Church? I don't see much of it in the bible (unless you count the Deacons/table servants being put in place to ensure racial groups were served equally).

Anyway mate, don't get too fussed about it. If people want to go to the PS meals they will. Tinsle is more attractive than food but Jesus said his food was do to the will of the Father (John 4:34). Some people are hungry for this, others just want a meal. Let's be faithful in what God is calling us to do. Thanks for putting up your thoughts. Have a great Christmas mate!

Yan, but taking the pictures and videos without permission IS NOT on for all sorts of reasons – dignity and privacy for a start. Yes, Planetshakers is reputed for “tithing” and selling things to collect funds and rightly so. Planetshakers do help people but not as Jesus did – more like the Pharisee’s coming from a position of power and not one of servitude as Jesus. Stay with them mate and live in the nice cotton wool world of Planetshakers. If you are ready to come serve, let me know.

What a hypocritical rant this turned out to be when YOU now yourself take pictures of the people eating at your church plants community meals AND offer food to draw & entice people to attend the Centre??? There is one picture on your Church plants fb page that clearly shows a girl holding her hand up to block the picture being taken, yet it was taken AND publicly published anyway. Also you are putting people (mainly women & children) who may be attending the meals and escaping domestic violence at risk by publishing pictures of the people at the meals on a public social network site, particularly when they are regularly advertised events, so one would reasonably assume the people may be there the week after week…fantastic knowledge to make available to a potential disgruntled ex-partner of any of your guests!!! In addition Quote ‘While a wonderful change to the seeming mundane meals that are on offer each week by organisations such as churches who struggle each week with volunteers, let alone food and finances” (end quote) I would also like to question what your purpose & intentions were for attending these community meals? I challenge your motives for doing so..and ask you if you REALLY needed to attend them (even continuing to attend them long after your appointment with the Salvation Army & perhaps even now) full well knowing how much they struggle at times to feed and serve the truly needy in our community. If it was to form some kind of relationship with the attendee’s then surely you couldve done so by offering to volunteer like you did elsewhere rather than yourself, consume much needed resources clearly in short supply.
What is your centre doing to REALLY benefit the Community??? What are you doing to bring Jesus to these people’s lives…Jesus didn’t offer people coffee, cartoon video’s & the internet!!! And why do you keep claiming your a ‘Pastor’ what formal training have you had? When & where were you commissioned as a Minister? I sincerely doubt your motives for working for the Salvation Army, you were looking for a place to live, a paid job, a way to feed yourself for nothing..and SHOCK, they offered you a paid job WITH paid accomodation as part of the package, you were not even a Soldier when you signed up with them nor did you attend any of the Salvation Army Worship Services prior to you appointment…its time you saw how people REALLY see you and your so called ’cause’

Ahhh so the critic finds my blog and still hides behind anonymity.
You sound like you have some severe issues with me and the centre yet won’t allow me to engage in a healthy discussion with you about these issues – rather hiding behind a psuedonym. Cowardly even.
Let me attempt to answer some of your accusations.
Firstly, there are vast differences between what this post is about and what we are doing at the centre. Have you even been there? We are not offering a community meal – rather a supper and unlike community meals, we encourage folk to hang around and engage with one another after with games, videos and other community events. It is not an avenue to get folk into the church, rather fulfilling a need that was expressed to me by several people. Many of the folk who come already attend church somewhere and we have had one or two come to our worship service.
Secondly, everyone who attends the centre is aware that we take pictures as part of our effort to create community. If someone doesn’t want their pic taken we honour that – but have had NO-ONE say that would not like their pic included. The girl in question with her hand up is not holding her hand up defence out of fear – rather fun and is the daughter of a volunteer.
Thirdly, the only meals in the community that I attend are by invitation and while at one, I do have a meal, but at both I am there for the guests, and actively engage with them. I have been at one of the meals less lately due to the increasing work at the centre.
Finally, who are you to call into question my motivations for working for The Salvation Army – you are afraid to identify yourself here, yet you accuse me as if knowing my heart and motivation. I believe in the priesthood of all believers and have only been called a Pastor by the media or others who feel that way about what I am doing. I may not be ordained by any church including The Salvation Army but that does not mean I cannot do what I am called for. I was placed where I am by a Territoral Commissioner for The Salvation Army who believes in myself and what we are doing. Happy to ask him to answer your accusations about this.

Instead of leaving abusive and derisive comments around why not come down to the centre and meet some of the guests and here the myriad of positive comments that folk say about the work.

Oh, and about being a hypocrite, the post about explains what happened and perhaps doesn’t quite express the gulf between the volunteers and guests that was evident at the meal. A gulf that is non-existent at our events.

To the person Honest,
That picture/ photo of an arm up in the air,is a photo of me.I asked for a photo with an arm up in the air,as it was a picture taken for my girlfriend as a joke.
If you look at the photo I have put a funny comment up about the photo as if I wanted to answer a question.I apologise if some people got the wrong end of the stick.I always tell or ask people if i can take photos. This photo was taken with my camera.
The joke between my girlfriend and I with arm up in air,I will not go into as it is a private joke between her and me.
